Framed
Title:  Framed
Description:  After a quick ride down to Baron, eight miles away, I was able to get ahead far enough to set up for him coming through what passes for town there. The power is framed by, first, the crossbucks for a private crossing, then the lift plow sign, and MP 250.

On the creek
Title:  On the creek
Description:  The DPU crosses Baron Creek, in another shot taken from the car window. I love driving the Dodge, but getting in and out of the low slung car quickly is now a challenge for my six foot, 240 pound body with bad ankles and stiff joints. Sometimes I yield to the effects of advancing decrepitude. Its now late enough in the year that the sun does not come around to the west side of the bridge til very late in the day, and then the shadows of twilight are taking over.

DPUs, finally
Title:  DPUs, finally
Description:  I had been trying to get some good shots of the head end, and knew if I waited for the DPU at Westville, the shot at Baron was in question. After the signal shot, the only shot to do on the creek, and here at CR E 754 was the DPU. It was getting toward 1400, and I wanted to get heading back, since we had to go to Coweta OK for my grandsons football game. Notable, is the three unit set of DPU's, all BNSF. Usually there are a couple of KCS units added at Pittsburg.

Out of the shadows
Title:  Out of the shadows
Description:  The I 181 rolls north along MO 59 approaching Anderson, catching the last spot of sun along the route as it rolls out of the shadow of a ridge west of the line. This was a spirited chase. Two units had 37 stack platforms, 20 autos, and 6 articulated racks, and made good time. I didn't beat him here by much; note the railfan chase vehicle hastily parked on the shoulder!!

This is not the 4877 you are looking for
Title:  This is not the 4877 you are looking for
Description:  It was inevitable that, sooner or later, I would come across the 4877. Unfortunately, not the celebrated Tuscan red GG 1-though I did see and ride behind it over 40 years ago-but the KCS ES 44 that is just another GE in the fleet. I was returning from the I 181 chase, and happened upon this northbound M 261 just as I rolled into downtown Gravette. Hes got 57 cars in tow as he rolls into the gathering gloom. In an odd twist, second unit CP 8769 is the second CP 8769 I've seen; the other was an RS 18 at Mechanicville on the D&H in 1984.

Finally some sun
Title:  Finally some sun
Description:  And a little warmth, too. The weekend had been dismal, 50s washout rain, then cold. By Wednesday, it had warmed up a bit, into the 50s with screaming sun. I heard a southbound horn, and beat a path out of the house and headed for Westville. Finding nothing there, and a dark signal, I worked up to Watts. Upon arrival, I heard CP 8930 south calling the dispatcher. Cool, got him, now leading a southbound grain train off the Illinois River bridge at Watts.

Out of the shadows
Title:  Out of the shadows
Description:  Its now the time of year where the sun is low, and the shadows reach places they would not other times of year. One must adjust accordingly. The southbound grain train splits the signals at CP North Watts as it blasts south, catching a patch of sun as it rolls past.

Title:  Close in
Description:  I got sandbagged by slowpokes coming down from Westville, and missed the shot at the crossing in Baron, but was able to catch up before he got to the crossing near MP 252. I was hoping for a little more color, but its a bit early yet for this far south. I got the train in the trees, even if they are mostly green.

All BNSF
Title:  All BNSF
Description:  The coal trains typically come out of Wyoming in a 2x1 set up, two units up front, one behind. KCS will add a pair of diesels at KC or Pittsburg for the trip south. Most of the time, theyre a pair of KCS units. Lately, though, its more often been a 2x3 set of BNSF power, as we see here.

It started with a horn to the south.
Title:  It started with a horn to the south.
Description:  I was out working in the yard and heard a horn, which I determined was a northbound from the grind of the power coming up the hill from Watts. As I got into town, I could see a southbound in the siding. Ah, now, choices. I shot the northbound behind a pair of CP units, a relatively short train of 236 axles according to the detector at Davidson Rd. I quickly weighed my options, then heard KCS 4824 call the signal at South Siloam Springs. Belle in the lead, southbound. Easy choice!!

Surprise
Title:  Surprise
Description:  I took off south, to find the 262 train had arrived at Watts, and was holding the main. As I drove into town, I heard the detector at MP 238 go off. Crap, hell probably be here before I can catch him in good light. I was right, The head end was already coming up the siding, it was the 261 train, coming in with 80 cars, blocked by its southbound counterpart. Not that it mattered; the angle I had was the "dark" side for both trains. My only hope was the northbound would pull up past the end of the southbound, and I could get him north of the yard office. I lucked out on that one, getting the power just as it peeked out behind the 262, but its ridiculously backlit. Oh well....five minutes faster, Id have had a nicely lit shot near MP 237, south of the yard.

Favorite spot
Title:  Favorite spot
Description:  One of several spots I like to shoot is just south of the intersection of US 59 and Chewie Rd, where theres a nice S curve on both the road and railroad. This shot was opened up when US 59 was widened to four lanes a few years back-like about 7 now. Its a good shot of the train coming around the curve, but as youll see in the next few shots, its starting to get overgrown.

Nose on
Title:  Nose on
Description:  I try not to do the standard 3/4 wedge at the crossing shot; its not all that imaginitive. It does, with good lighting, work quite well, though. The speed restriction coming out of MP 239 is a godsend for a chaser-as is the 65 MPH speed limit on the highway-and this was an easy shot to get.

Title:  Caught him, but this will be a short chase
Description:  Wed taken a day to go up to Joplin for a couple of things, and just to get out on one of the nicer days weve had after snow and bone chilling cold. On the return, we got off I 49 at the Anderson exit, turning south onto MO 59. As we went under the bridge just south of the ramp, there was a train rolling south. It started with a horn in the distance
Title:  It started with a horn in the distance
Description:  I was outside working on some yard task, when I heard a horn off to the south. I took off for town to see what was up. A check of the signal at South Siloam Springs showed a restricting-see the Track and Signals album for that sequence-so a northbound will be taking the siding. By the time I got into position, the train-it was the 181, whose back end we see here-was already too far up for me to get a good shot, and the southbound you see here had passed the detector up at Davidson Rd. I set up on the US 412 bridge, and shot the back end meet.

Southbound grain close up
Title:  Southbound grain close up
Description:  The grain train rolls its 105 cars under the US 412 overpass, and heads down the hill to Watts. Should have let him go, and followed the 181, which had a pair of Belles, the leader a KCSM AC 44 leading, up to Gentry. Youll see why shortly.

Canned
Title:  Canned
Description:  The grain train I shot at Siloam made it as far as Watts, where he held the main-for about 45 minutes. He was waiting on an empty northbound coal train. I could have shot the 181 in Gentry and still made it back here for the meet. So it goes , another day of railfanning.

To the nines.
Title:  To the nines.
Description:  I headed down to Westville to see if I could catch the coal train coming north. After a bit of a wait, he showed, a TXUX train with a UP leader, and both units ending in "99". The power on coal trains mixes a lot more lately than it used to; these trains used to get solid BNSF consists, with KCS power added to get them over the hilly Heavener Sub. We see it north of Westville.
