Tunkhannock Viaduct, the worlds largest reinforced concrete structure, still in service over 100 years after the first train rolled across it, dominates the scene above this snow covered cornfield. At 2600 feet long and 240 feet high, it dominates the whole town. |

Prairie skyscrapers |
Description: |
Most towns on the plains had at least one of these tall, concrete structures to house grain to be shipped. They were often the tallest man made structures for miles, and out here on the high plains, they could be seen from a long way off. While these elevators on the Cimarron Valley, a former Santa Fe line, were not the largest in the state by any means, they still had a commanding presence over the surrounding landscape. |

Where the money comes from |

Railroads need stuff to haul if they are going to generate any revenue. One of the prime sources is grain, which is taken from elevator to mill, though sometimes to port. Here in Coffeyville, this feed mill was providing a reason for the railroads existence. |

Big place |
Description: |
Coffeyville was once an important point on the Missouri Pacific, which had a yard and offices here, as it was a division point. Now, the UP still runs here on the line from Kansas City to Little Rock, but Watco runs all the other lines here, one of them former Santa Fe, which also came to town. Still, the heritage remains intact, at least on the side of the building. |

Not a railroad structure |
Description: |
But important to the railroad nonetheless. This grain elevator at Yukon OK once was served by the Rock Island; happily, this part of the Choctaw Route was still seeing local service from UP the day we were there. Out here in granger country, grain shipments were a big part of the railroad scene. This elevator is well preserved, with good signage, making it an attractive photographic subject. |

For a small place-there isnt much here in todays world, at least as far as the railroad is concerned, and what is sits mostly off the Turnpike interchange, yet it had a substantial station. Description: |
The MKT station at Big Cabin has not seen a train in many years, and has been left to the elements, as have many stations around the country. As a result, the shrubbery has grown up, in this case, obscuring the station almost completely from the road side. Yes, there is a station in there. You can see the edge of the roof at the left of the bush. |

Description: |
A 3/4 shot of the massive SP/Rock Island station. Even though the Rock owned the track to Santa Rosa, another 50 miles west, the operating change was here. This was also the terminus for Rock Islands Choctaw Route trains, which connected to the Golden State route about a mile to the east. The right of way can be seen from the US 54 overpass, and can be followed to some extent all the way to Amarillo. The Golden State route, named for the train that plied these rails from Chicago to LA, is still an active part of the UP system. |
