Description:
Former CB&Q RPO 1945 has been on display in Galesburg, IL for many years. THis car and other items, including a 4-6-4 steam locomotive, are located near the Amtrak station. This view of the car shows a closer-in view of the actual RPO section, with the windows and "mail crane". Imagine standing by that open door as the train was going at just about any speed above a fast walk!

This is the middle section of former CB&Q RPO 1945, on display in Galesburg, IL on 1-8-2012. The "slot" or receptacle (sp?) to the right of the word "MAIL" is a slot for placing mail in the car itself, as others have told me. Does anyone have more information about how RPO's were used "back in the day"?

CB&Q 1945, "B" or hand brake end
Description:
This view of CB&Q 1945, on display in Galesburg, IL on 1-8-2012, shows some interesting hardware, such as the handle and ratchet next to the vestibule and diaphragm. This car also has a number of grab irons, a vent (?) near the edge of the car, and if you look closely, you'll see the Christmas lights along the edge between the side and the roof.
