Here is a 43-page article by Mr. James J.D. Lynch, Jr., entitled "Overview Of The History And Development Of The Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Shops." It was published originally in the Autumn 1996 issue of "Keystone" magazine, pages 18-60. "On the eve of the PRR's centennial, the Altoona Works had expanded by 1945 to over 217 acres from a small cluster of shop buildings which in the early 1850's occupied about 15 acres. Altoona Works employment in 1945 stood at 12,500." (Page 59) N.B.: This article consists largely of excerpts derived from two sources: Mr. James Dredge's 1879 book entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad" and Mr. H.W. The locomotive depicted here is PRR engine #4408, an I-1SA built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during March of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in September of 1937, and retired in September of 1958 after 35 years of faithful service.

Here is page 33 of a 43-page article by James J.D. Lynch, Jr., entitled "Overview Of The History And Development Of The Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Shops." It was published originally in the Autumn 1996 issue of "The Keystone" magazine, page 50. Left Column, Second Photo Down: Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #5824 and another unit whose number is not recorded. Both units were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #5824 was built in 1947 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are passing by the Altoona Passenger Station on their way back to East Altoona for yet another helper run up the Allegheny Mountains and back. Right Column, Second Photo Down: Shown here is PRR engine #9583-B, a BF-15 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1949 and rated at 1,500 horsepower.
