With a pair of E-units and a combination of lightweight and heavyweight cars, Louisville & Nashville train No. 6 - the northbound HUMMING BIRD - was negotiating one of the temporary tracks around the construction site of the Franklin Avenue underpass on its way out of New Orleans. This was one of several grade separation projects built around the city as a part of the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal project. (approximate day)

Shore Line Branch Local
Description:
What this image lacks in sharpness it more than makes up for in its subject matter! Gulf Mobile & Ohio FA1 units 735 and 748 were pulling up to the Slidell, Louisiana depot on the "back track" with the southbound Shore Line Branch local. After exchanging paperwork with the operator, the train would back up to North Slidell and then continue on its journey from Bogalusa to Covington and back. Notice the footboards on the 735's pilot to make the unit more suitable for local service.

NOPB 33
Description:
New Orleans Public Belt number 33 was on e of three 900 horsepower switchers built for the railroad in December 1937. NOPB 31-33 were among the very first diesel-electric switchers built by Baldwin specifically for a customer. They cost $89,870 each and the 33 was the last one in operation. All were retired and scrapped in 1970. (approximate month and day)

GM&O S1 664
Description:
Recently-repainted Gulf Mobile & Ohio S1 664 was one of four such units (661-664) bought by the railroad in 1940. All four were retired in 1972, just before the GM&O-ICG merger, and traded in to EMD on the railroad's last new locomotives, GP38-2's 751-754. The GM&O also inherited 15 newer S1's (10-24) when it acquired the Alton, and these survived into the ICG era; but all were retired within 2-3 years.

GM&O 1517
Description:
Gulf Mobile & Ohio RS3 number 1517 was working the railroad's Shoreline Braoch local from Bogalusa to Covington, Louisiana and had just paid a visit to the agent at the Southern Railway's depot in Slidell to exchange paperwork. Now that everyone was back on board, the engine was returning north on the Southern's "back track" to the GM&O connection about a mile away so it could cjntinue on its way to Covington.

L&N C420 1313
Description:
When the Louisville & Nashville and the Southern Pacific began operating run-through trains through New Orleans in 1969, geeps were the most common locomotives, followed by GE units; but the L&N would occasionally provide an Alco. Such was the case this day, when L&N C420 1313 showed up behind L&N GP38 4002 and SP GP35’s 6634 and 6656 on a westbound train near Franklin Avenue. The 4-year-old Alco was still in its original paint scheme, with its road number on its hood and an emblem on its cab. (approximate date of photo)

This was a view looking north from the south end of the Gulf Mobile & Ohio's CANAL YARD in New Orleans. A set of geeps were resting in the REBEL SHED, originally built to house the
REBEL

L&N No. 9
Description:
On the afternoon of 18 September 1970 Louisville & Nashville train 9 – the southbound
PAN-AMERICAN
– was crossing Industrial Parkway in eastern New Orleans with E7A 793 and one coach. The reason for this unusually brief consist isn’t known, but the train was running about six hours late! Sometimes the L&N ran a train like this from Flomaton, Alabama to New Orleans if the
GULF WIND
from Jacksonville missed its connection with No. 9; but on this day, this was the only L&N passenger train into New Orleans. The 793 went back north a few hours later on No. 8, with five cars.

Southern Pacific engineer A.V. Harper was standing in front of FP7 6458 at the Lafayette, Louisiana depot. Mr. Harper had just brought the last daily

Louisville & Nashville E8A 785 was at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, in between runs on the
PAN-AMERICAN
. The locomotive had been built in February 1950 as St. Louis-San Francisco 2009
JET PILOT
and was purchased by the L&N in 1965. The L&N installed flat number boards, removed one port hole and painted over the others. The 785 was retired in March 1972 and used as trade-in credit with EMD.

Description:
This photo shows former Illinois Central property which would soon be cleared for the construction of the Louisiana Superdome and other redevelopment. The street in the lower right corner is Loyola Avenue, and the one running from the upper left to the middle right side is Poydras Street. The long building along Poydras Street at Loyola had been IC Warehouse No. 7 and the tall building across Poydras is New Orleans City Hall. There were once eight tracks on this side of of Warehouse No. 7 and then there was an open area for storage and then five teams tracks.
The buildings on this side of the team tracks were IC Warehouses No. 3, 2 and 1, and there were tracks between all of these. The tall building in the foreground is a Federal office building with a Weather Service radar on the roof. The low building on the lower left is the Main Post Office; and next to it, out of sight, is New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The long building to the left of the Federal office building was IC Warehouse No. 9, and out of sight to the left of that was the ICRR hospital.
Ground breaking for the Superdome was on 12 August 1971, about a year after this photo was taken, and it opened on 3 August 1975. The stadium is now on the left side of this photo, and much of the land shown here is occupied by an office building and a hotel. (approximate day)

Description:
New Orleans Public Belt Railroad number 47 was switching the south end of Claiborne Yard, along the west side of the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal. The smokestacks identified the location of the Lone Star cement plant, and were landmarks in this neighborhood for many years. The 47 was a Baldwin DS-4-4-660 built in January 1949 for $73,950. It was traded-in to EMD the year after this photo was taken and it was scrapped in New Orleans. (approximate day)

L&N 3448
Description:
Louisville & Nashville car 3448
was on the
PAN AMERICAN-GULF WIND
at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal about six months before the beginning of Amtrak, when L&N passenger service into New Orleans would end. The car was one of nine 4-section / 4-roomette / 5-double-bedroom / 1-compartment sleepers built by Pullman-Standard in 1954 for service between the Midwest and Florida. Initially there were two each for the Atlantic Coast Line, Chicago & Eastern Illinois, Florida East Cast and Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis, with one for the L&N; but the L&N eventually owned the C&EI and NC&StL cars too, and they briefly showed up in New Orleans-Jacksonville service around the time this photo was taken.

was originally NC&StL 251 and went into private ownership in 1971. It moved to Mexico in 1980 where it became Servicio de Coches Dormitorios y Conexos (SCD) 705

Description:
Illinois Central train No. 6, the northbound
PANAMA LIMITED
, was leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with an unusual set of four E-units, instead of the usual two or three. E8A 4027 wore a unique paint scheme, with a wider-than-normal orange band. On all of the IC’s other E-units, the orange band matched that of the railroad’s passenger cars, but on the 4027 the separation line was the batten strip between the upper and lower side sheets. The water pouring out of the nose of Louisville & Nashville E7A 791 showed that the boiler water tanks were full as the unit was being serviced from the opposite side at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal engine facility. L&N E6 and E7 units which had been modified with enlarged boiler water capacity – 2,050 gallons instead on 1,050 – had nose-mounted water filler openings such as this. On the next track, NOUPT SW8 number 1 was moving a set of Illinois Central power which included E6A 4003. (approximate date of photo)

Description:
Something that was not seen very often on the Gulf Mobile & Ohio was a lone Alco heading across the Southern Railway's Lake Pontchartrain trestle on its way to New Orleans. The GM&O would run an extra train on regular train No. 33's schedule if there was an unusually heavy amount of southbound traffic there, or if No. 33 was running late and they wanted to get some Bogalusa cars to connecting roads at New Orleans. We don't know what the situation was here, but it made for an interesting and pleasant sight. (approximate day and month)

GM&O RS2 1511
Description:
Gulf Mobile & Ohio RS2 number 1511 was heading south through Sbidell along the Southern Railway's "back track" towards the Southern depot. The Alco had a few cars off of the Shoreline Branch local and was heading for the depot to exchange some paperwork with the agent; then ht would back up north to the GM&O connection at North Slidell, and continue on its way to Covington.
