Album Info:Back in early May, Dad and I took a day to head out to the Fort Wayne Line to grab some of the few position light signals that remain active along what was once the very busy former PRR main line. Neither of us had ever shot trains on the FWL, so we weren't sure what to expect, but we were happy with our results. Enjoy!

CSX 975
Title:  CSX 975
Description:  One main line that my Dad and I had always wanted to try to get out to is the former Pennsy Fort Wayne Line. Now owned by NS, it is the last active NS main line that still has a majority of the former position light signals still standing. However, the line sees very little traffic. Despite that, we decided to try our luck on a few of the local trains which usually run at pretty consistent times. We would follow the C03 west to Orrville, then catch the C67 from Massillon in Orrville as well, and grab whatever else NS would send our way. We got an early start to the day, and with signs of the C03 still not yet on duty, we decided to pull off at Crestline when we heard M331 mark up with ID Dispatch to continue west with a fresh crew aboard. A maintenance crew was welding a section of rail right where I was wanting to park and walk back to the signals, so we had to try to find another option to grab the train coming by the trilights. A dead end road just down from there in a small neighborhood allowed us to do just that. M331 cruises through CP 75 as the MOW crew continues working on their spot weld.

ASRY 31
Title:  ASRY 31
Description:  When we arrived in Mansfield, we found the crew of AH1 working the yard preparing to head toward Ashland. My dad had never shot the Ashland before so this was a treat for him. The train was using the same highood I had shot on it back in October, but Ill take it, as this time it is facing forward and not backwards.

NS 3024
Title:  NS 3024
Description:  We thought about getting one more shot of the Ashland somewhere in town, but by then C03 was on its way west to work the grain elevator and steel mill. So, we set up at CP MANS to grab the train passing under the signal bridge there. A GP40-2 brings up the head-end while a GP38-2 with a sweet RS3L brings up the rear.

Title:  NS 5268
Description:  NS 5268 brings up the rear of C03. An interesting brick building stands the left of the frame. We were pretty unfamiliar with the area so we had no idea what it was, but it did make for a good prop.

NS 5268
Title:  NS 5268
Description:  Since this was our first time following this line, I decided it would be best if we stuck with signals that were easy to get to instead of ones that required a long hike. So, with that, CP Lucas was our next stop. After a brief stop in the yard to grab some paperwork, C03 continued east and we got the train passing through the sticks there.

NS 5268
Title:  NS 5268
Description:  We jumped the train all the way to the intermediate pair outside of Orrville next. Definitely not one of the more spectacular sets along the line, but I have passed this set of signals a few times and have always wanted to get a train by it. Now, we did. The RS3L sounded phenomenal at track speed here!

ORHS 471
Title:  ORHS 471
Description:  We had a few road trains coming finally, but plenty of time to kill between them, so we decided to head down to the Orrville Railroad Historical Society. Their main power which is apparently a GP7u despite it looking nothing like one, sits and awaits the weekend where it will be fired up and pulling rides a few miles to the north and back.

WE 7002
Title:  WE 7002
Description:  NS 171, the only westbound road freight, was coming into the picture, and so was an eastbound coal train, but we still had a pretty decent wait ahead of us before either showed. Then, just by chance, we heard the defect detector on the Wheeling at Kidron go off. We made a mad dash south of town, and sure enough, the headlights of WE 221 were visible. We pulled off to the side of the road and grabbed the train crossing OH 57. Coke loads up front, followed by a short string of manifest on the back behind a pair of corporate painted SD40-2s.

NS 4457
Title:  NS 4457
Description:  We wanted to get back to Wooster to grab NS 171 passing underneath the signal bridge there. Unfortunately, it and NS 747 were both meeting here in Orrville, so we had to settle for 171 passing the sticks at CP ORR. NS 171 unfortunately was taking the "siding" for 747, which put it on the far track, making the shot look a bit awkward. Oh well. Its two more PLs at least.

NS 5321
Title:  NS 5321
Description:  NS C67 was tied up on the JM Smucker campus, so we almost considered leaving, but just as we were about to, we did notice a crew in the other unit. Sure enough, the geep on the rear disconnected with a single hopper and took it down to Purina at the end of the line. We were hoping they would shove into the siding, but it just left the car on the end of the spur and went back. We grabbed our first shot of it arriving back at Smuckers.

NS 6314
Title:  NS 6314
Description:  After the geep was tacked back onto the train, C67 keyed up Chicago and told them they were ready to head back toward Canton. We moved back into town to grab the train coming back onto the main line. The SD40E on the south end had a very nice P5, and the water tower in town made for a good frame.

Description:  C67 speeds east by the old Purina Chows elevator in Orrville. With that, our day on the Fort Wayne Line came to an end, but the day was still young, so we decided to head over to the Orrville Creamery on the north side of town and get some milkshakes, and follow the Wheeling north.

LWV 101
Title:  LWV 101
Description:  When we left Lodi, Wheeling keyed up WE 221 and told them they would be meeting WE 222 at the siding just north of Wellington. While we hadnt expected to go that far north, to get another Wheeling train, we decided to. CSX on the Greenwhich Sub was heavy with traffic as well. However, first order of business in Wellington was to shoot the Lorain and West Virginia E Unit. Im hoping to actually shoot this running sometime in the Fall when the leaves change, but we will see.

CSX 5273
Title:  CSX 5273
Description:  CSX I009 was riding hot on the heels of M635, which we grabbed coming underneath the signal bridge on the west side of town. I009 ended up being our final train of the day. We went to Subway to grab some supper and another westbound passed when we were coming out, but with rain moving into the area, it was getting dark fast, so we decided to call it a day. We ended up seeing everything we expected to see and more! Hopefully we can make a trip out to the Fort Wayne Line again soon.
