CNW 4-4-0 #203 - Chicago & North Western |
| Description: |
Although an F3A would wear the same #203 later, the first to do so was this 1899 Schenectady built American type locomotive. An example of the B class locomotives that served the CNW in the early years, this loco had spindly looking 75" drivers but could develop a respectable 190 psi boiler pressure for its 19.5"x26" cylinders. The engine weight was a delicate 137,000 lb and it could generate a modest tractive effort of 21,289 lb, enough to handle the lighter, smaller trains of its day. Simple, unobstructed style - must have been much easier to work on than the later models built 40 years later! It is shown parked at the CNW shops in Chicago. The date is approximate. |

| Description: |
249 of these Z class (for Zulus) were built by Baldwin and Schenectady between 1909-1913. They were were described as "good sized Consolidations" with 61" drivers, developing 185 psi boiler pressure for their 25"x32" cylinders. The engine weight tipped the scales at 232,000 lb and they could generate a tractive effort of 47,377 lb. No photographer listed and date is approximate. |

| Description: |
Built by either Baldwin or Alco-Schenectady during a 7 year period between 1901-07, this was an example of an R-1 class Ten-Wheeler type locomotive. It had 63" drivers and could develop 200 psi boiler pressure for its 21"x26" cylinders. The engine weight was a modest 179,500 lb and it could produce a 30,940 lb tractive effort. Here is an example of a 1923 Alco-Schenectady built class E-2 Pacific. A total of 186 were built in a 14 year period making it another large uniform power group on the CNW roster. They all had tall stepping 79" drivers, developed an impressive 225 psi boiler pressure for their 26"x28" cylinders. The engine weight hovered around 295,000 lb and it could produce a medium tractive effort of 45,823 lb. The date is approximate. |

| Description: |
Although an E9 wore the CNW #505 later, the first to do so on the CNW roster was this 1909 Alco-Schenectady built Pacific. It was an E class loco with 75" drivers and could develop a very respectable boiler pressure of 200 psi to feed to its 25"x28" cylinders. The engine weight came in at 260,000 lb and its tractive effort was a medium 39,667 lb. Unfortunately its days of service are fast drawing near as the age of steam is disappearing in the 1950's. |
