Description:
Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. At the left (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #7923 and #8618. #7923 is an ES-12 built by GM-EMD in January of 1958 and rated at 1,200 horsepower, while #8618 is an AS-18M built by the American Locomotive Company in August of 1956 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They're pulling a mixed-cargo train that originated in Hollidaysburg into the Altoona Yards, and are about to pass under the new 4th Street Footbridge. Also visible are two locomotives returning to East Altoona from helper/pusher duty. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8656 and #8675. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8656 was constructed in December of 1957, while #8675 was built in March of 1958. The large structure at the far left houses the Ward Trucking Company. (#40 of 44)

Description:
Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8675 and #8656. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8675 was constructed in March of 1958, while #8656 was built in December of 1957. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a westbound mixed-cargo freight train that's just about past WORKS Tower at the left. Immediately ahead of them is PRR N-8 cabin car #478164. They are pulling a 17-car westbound passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Pittsburgh and points West. Also visible are numerous "Ore Jennies" in a westbound iron-ore train and several buildings of the PRR's 12th Street Shops. This photo taken from the steps along side of the 17th Street Bridge.
