Description:
Louisville & Nashville K-5 class 4-6-2 269 was facing north along the Mississippi River at the Bienville Street grade crossing in New Orleans. One the left was the Bienville Street Wharf while on the right was the railroad’s trainshed. The 269 had been built by Baldwin (56129) in January 1923 and was retired on 7 July 1953. L&N Train No. 34
Description:
Louisville & Nashville train No. 34, the combined
Piedmont
for New York and
Gulf Wind
for Jacksonville, had just gone through the curve from the Mississippi riverfront onto the median of Elysian Fields Avenue and was crossing Decatur Street. The
Gulf Wind
operated over the Seaboard Air Line west of Chattahochee, Florida and the third car is a Seaboard coach. No. 34 train was being pulled by K-5 class 4-6-2 269. It was one of 26 K-5 class USRA light Pacifics, and one of eight (264-271) built by Baldwin in 1923. It was retired on 7 July 1953. (approximate day of photo)

L&N Pacific 269
Description:
Preceded by a flagman, Louisville & Nashville K-5 class Pacific 269 was rolling out of the railroad's trainshed and across Canal Street in New Orleans. The loco has just uncoupled from a southbound passenger train and was heading to the roundhouse at Julia Street Yard. The automobiles behind the flagman had just gotten off of a ferry boat from the west side of the Mississippi River, and the walkway above the loco provided pedestrian access to the ferry. The railroad closed Canal Street Station and the Julia Street roundhouse when its passenger trains moved to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal in April 1954. (approximate day of photo)

L&N Julia Street Yard
Description:
This image shows the variety of motive power that could be found at the Louisville & Nashville's Julia Street Yard during the transition from steam to diesel. Pictured here were K-4 Pacific 269 (Baldwin 1923) with commuter train No. 12, J-3 Mikado 1591 (Alco 1923), E7A 792 (EMD 1949), and Alco S1 57 (Alco 1949). The yard was about three blocks south of the railroad’s Canal Street Station, and packed into an area of about four square blocks were a freight yard, coach yard, enginehouse, turntable, freight houses and warehouses. The coach yard was on the extreme right of this photo. (approximate month and day)

Description:
Louisville & Nashville K-5 Pacific 269 was pulling train No. 7 into New Orleans along Ely„jan Fields Avenue. The engine was crossing Royal Street, and the photo was taken from the crossing tower at Dauphine Street. The 269 was built by Baldwin in 1923, and was retired on 7 July 1953. Train numzer 7 was discontinued in September 1953. (approximate day of photo)
