PRR 4-8-2 #6929
Description:
Here is the Baldwin example of the 4-8-2 "Mountain" type locomotive. Similar to its Lima built sister, this 1925 M1 class loco also had 72" drivers, could generate 250 psi boiler pressure for it 27 x 30 cylinders and could apply a tractive effort of 64,550 lbs. One significant difference is it tipped the scales a little heavier - 385,000 pounds. No photographer listed - definitely a reprint from a negative. The date is approximate

Top Photo Caption: "1926 Baldwin-built M1 No. 6944 receives class repairs at Juniata Shops sometime in the 1930s." Engine #6944 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in November of 1926 and retired in May of 1949. Bottom Photo Caption: "K4 No. 1361 during mid-overhaul at the Altoona Car Shops, winter 1986-87." Photo by Doyle McCormack. Engine #1361 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956 after amassing over 2,469,000 revenue miles, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 8 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, withdrawn from service and disassembled because of safety concerns, and is now being restored again for further excursion service.

TRB. Here is the second of two successive 35mm color slides of photos by John M. Prophet III that were taken at the Rockville Bridge near Rockville, Pennsylvania. Shown here are two Pennsylvania Railroad Class "M" (4-8-2) "Mountain" locomotives. At the left is #6760, an M-1B built in Juniata as an M-1A during 1930, rebuilt as an M-1B in May of 1948, and retired in September of 1959. At the right is #6948, an M-1 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in December of 1926 and retired in September of 1959. They have just passed ROCKVILLE Tower, and are about to cross the Bridge with an iron-ore train bound for the steel mills of Western Pennsylvania.
