PRR 2-8-0 #8618
Description:
As the dispatcher in the station and fellow trainman watch, this H class Consolidation gets underway with a blast of smoke from its stack. Built by the PRR Altoona shops as an H8a class with the original number of 1831 in 2/1908, it was later rebuilt in 12/1915 as an H10s. Unfortunately no location, date, or photographer was listed on the back of the photo.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8818, an H-10S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata as Vandalia H-8C number "160" during February of 1912, rebuilt in Juniata as an H-9SC in December of 1915, renumbered "8818" in 1917, later rebuilt as an H-10S and equipped with a mechanical stoker, renumbered "9981" in 1951, and retired in October of 1953 after 41 years of faithful service. Coal Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by J.J. Buckley that was taken near Englewood, Illinois, in December of 1949. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8949 and three GM-EMD "EF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. #8949 was built in Juniata as an H-8C during March of 1912, rebuilt as an H-9SC in February of 1916, rebuilt as an H-10S in April of 1920, and retired in May of 1950 after 38 years of faithful service. Shown here are four Pennsylvania Railroad "Consolidations" built by four different firms. #7234 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as number "7234" during December of 1913, renumbered "7563" in 1958, and retired in October of 1958. #9989 was built in Juniata as Vandalia H-8C number "419" during February of 1912, rebuilt by Vandalia as H-8SC number "361" in September of 1916, renumbered PRR "8824" in 1917, rebuilt in Juniata as an H-10S in November of 1920, renumbered "9889" in 1951, later renumbered "9989," and retired in August of 1957. #9895 was built by the American Locomotive Company during June of 1913 and retired in October of 1957. #8173 was built by the Lima Locomotive Works during October of 1915 and retired in October of 1957. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam Power ~ East and West" that's produced by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (816-11).
