GCRY 8742 FRED HARVEY
Grand Canyon Railway car 8742 FRED HARVEY was built by Budd in 1955 as one of six GREAT DOMES for service on the EMPIRE BUILDER. It was originally Great Northern 1392 MOUNTAIN VIEW, and then Amtrak 9362, 9301 and 10030; before being sold in 2001 and became American Orient Express 800742 NEW ORLEANS. It was subsequently owned by Grand Luxe Rail and then American Railway Explorer, and it was briefly painted as ARE YELLOWSTONE before moving to the Grand Canyon Railway. Its GCRY number was derived from 800742 by omitting the two zeros! The change in the fluting above the letterboard at the near end of the car shows where Amtrak removed the vestibule when they rebuilt it with HEP for service on the AUTO-TRAIN in 1985.
