UPY 3008 S3-2B shows off a spotless coat of fresh paint while pushing a cut of cars at Davidson Yard. Electro Motive delivered this slug to Chicago & North Western as CNW 6657 SD38-2, part of a ten unit order arriving January 1975 for hump service at Proviso Yard in Chicago. After the UP-CNW merger this unit would have become UP 2813 but skipped this number series and instead became UPY 813 on April 7, 2001. Perhaps lack of dynamic brakes doomed this diesel, but on June 10, 2015 this unit emerged from the shop as UPY 3008 S3-2B paired to UP 3007 SD40N. Note this slug still retains two cooling fans at the rear similar to an SD38/SD38-2 but only has head and ditch lights on what is traditionally the front which suggests only one end of the slug can receive power from the mother unit. |
