PRR Altoona Works, #1 of 3, 1953
Hollyman. Here is the first of three photos of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Works. This photo was taken in August of 1953 by Tom Hollyman. In the foreground is the 7th Street Bridge, situated over the mainline tracks (Pittsburgh to the bottom, Harrisburg to the top). Sandwiched between 7th Street, Chestnut Avenue, and the mainline tracks are the Passenger Car Shops, the Finishing Roundhouse, and the Erecting & Machine Shop beyond them in the distance. The next landmark is the 4th Street Footbridge; situated under it are WORKS Tower (to the right of the mainline tracks) and SOUTH Tower (to the right of the yard tracks). Beyond the Bridge and adjacent to the mainline are the Westbound Dispatch Tracks (for locomotive crew changes); next over is the Eastbound Receiving Yard.
