Description:
Here is the photo on page 32 of a 40-page book published by Louis T. Henderson entitled "Trains: A Children's Picture Book Of Trains And Stories About Them." It was issued originally in 1935. Photo Caption: "'Pioneer' locomotive of the old Cumberland Valley, now part of the Pennsylvania Railroad." This locomotive was in use from 1851 to 1880. It burned wood, but could attain speeds of 70 miles per hour!

PRR "Altoona Shops Inspection Trip," Pages 2-3, 1937
Description:
Here are pages two and three of a 14-page pamphlet entitled "Altoona Shops Inspection Trip: Sunday, May 16 [1937]." It was published in advance of the Trip by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Page 2, Top Photo Caption: "'The Pioneer' in use 1851-1880. A wood burner, but could attain a speed of 70 miles per hour." Page 2, Bottom Photo Caption: "The GG1 of 1937 ~ a Pennsylvania Railroad giant." Shown here is PRR engine #4843, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built in Juniata during May of 1935 and rated at 4,620 horsepower. On page three is a "Foreword" by the PRR's 11th President, Mr. Martin Washington Clement, who occupied that office from 1935 through 1948.

Here is a photo by Don Wood that was taken in the roundhouse at Northumberland, Pennsylvania, on 13 May 1968. Prominent here is the "Pioneer" wood-burning steam locomotive of the old Cumberland Valley, later part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was in use from 1851 to 1880. John S. Vintage. Here is an original photo that I took at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, in December of 1971. Shown here is the Cumberland Valley's "Pioneer." This is the original 2-2-2T wood-burning steam locomotive that was in revenue service from 1851 to 1880.
