NL&G 46 |
Description: |
The lettering on this locomotive may read North Louisiana & Gulf, but it was actually owned by MidLouisiana Rail, a subsidiary of MidSouth Rail. GP38 number 46 was on a southbound train at Dodson, on the former Rock Island line between Hodge and Winnfield, with five chip hoppers and two tank cars. The locomotive was built in December 1967 as Pennsylvania-Reading Seashores Line 2000, and the extension of the front wall of the cab into the nose was to accomodate a console in the middle of the cab for bi-directional operation. The locomotive became Contrail 7660 in 1976 and NL&G 46 in May 1983, and moved on to the Iowa Interstate as their 600 sometime after this photo was taken. |

Looking Ahead |
Description: |
Here, the train is at Whitlow Jct., heading onto the F&P (former Rock Island) from the AD&N mainline. The photographer is facing toward Fordyce and you see the F&P mainline to Fordyce. This track was barely passable when Georgia Pacific bought it from the bankrupt Rock Island in 1981. It was then rebuilt with 85, 90, 100 and 112 pound ribbon rail with good ballast sections to FRA Class 3 Standards for 40 mph freight service. However, the railroad was operated at 20 mph under yard limit rules. |

Description: |
Whitlow Jct. was where the Rock Island from Tinsman, 14 miles south of Fordyce, on the Crossett Branch to Crossett. It crossed the AD&N then turned south and parallelled the AD&N 5 miles into Crossett. Before the Rock Island went under it had a major derailment in this section and abandoned their line from Whitlow Junction to Crossett in favor of trackage rights over the AD&N, thus the crossing was removed. F&P inherited this connection with the AD&N. The two side tracks were the former Rock Island interchange tracks with the AD&N. The F&P trains came on into Crossett and yarded in the Crossett Yard, and the two tracks were used for storage of cars. |

Description: |
Here the AD&N passenger special is stopped on the UP (former MP) mainline. The AD&N wye at Monticello was the mainline crossing of the UP with the legs being the two (north and south) connections to the UP mainline just west (to the left) of this picture. The train pulled across the diamond, backed through the north leg (connection) onto the UP mainline where the train is sitting here. When we left, the train headed through the south leg of the wye (connection) onto the AD&N mainline and southbound on to Crossett. |

Description: |
The view facing west, toward the end of the UPRR Warren sub at Warren, Ark. In the center foreground you can see first, the turnout to the left (south leg of wye connection to AD&N mainline, next, the turnout to the right (north leg of wye connection to the AD&N mainline) Further away you can see the AD&N crossing of the UP mainline, which is the straight leg of the wye. The train moved forward to the south leg of the wye, and onto the AD&N mainline for the southbound trip to Crossett. Interestingly, at the crossing diamond, the UP mainline was so much higher than the AD&N mainline approaches that the belly of the Rock Island Budd car barely cleared the tops of the rails. |

ADN 907 Clearing for our train |
Description: |
Our train is standing in front of the AD&N station/general office building at Crossett which sits between the three legs of the wye, along with the diesel shop. The switcher appears to be heading into the north leg of the wye to clear. The 8-track pond pass track yard is in the background. It had a yard air system and the northbound local was usually made on 3 tracks and had to be doubled over to the main. The back gate to the G-P plywood mill is on the left. Further left, out of sight, are the paper mills, chemical plants, sawmill, another plywood mille and an extrusion plant (paper). Here the train is either headed to Monticello or if on the return, it is headed for Whitlow Jct. and Fordyce. |

Description: |
The evening sun was fading fast as the northbound F&P excursion was making its last lap from Tinsman (on the former Rock Island Lousiana Mainline) to Fordyce (14 miles). The train was crossing Whitewater creek trestle some 5 miles north of Tinsman. The F&P consisted of this 14 miles of former RI mainline plus the entire Crossett Branch from Tinsman to Crossett with the last five miles being on trackage rights over the AD&N into Crossett. |
